| Description | The Asian Studies Program is one of four area studies programs located within the University Center for International Studies. Other areas represented are Latin American, Russia and East Europe, and West Europe. Within the Asian Studies Program the Center for East Asian Studies is designated as National Resource Center of the U.S. Department of Education. While our major emphasis lies with East Asia, within recent years we have been trying to improve our research and outreach capabilities with regard to South and Southeast Asia. |
| Teaching Resources | We have recently organized and catalogued our Teaching Resource Library so that area K-12 teachers as well as Pitt faculty can conveniently borrow videos, books and curriculum materials. |
| Program Activities | We offer frequent K-12 teacher workshops which attempt to blend scholarly information and pedagogical techniques. During 2000 we offered an East Asia seminar for grade 6-12 teachers under the auspices of the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. We sill again sponsor a seminar in 2001. Each year we organize one workshop/conference for regional college faculty, sometimes focusing only on Asia; other times it is an international event with all four area programs working together. We try to sponsor numerous East Asian cultural events, usually with a focuson theater or music. Our study abroad efforts are concentrated on a 3 week Pitt in China summer program which occurs at Beijing University. For the second year we sponsored a Pitt in India study program which is held in Hyderabad. |
