| Description | The Harvard East Asian Program is sponsored by the Childrens Museum, Boston and the Council on East Asian Studies at Harvard University. Established in 1976 and located at The Childrens Museum, the program runs in conjunction with the Harcourt Teacher Leadership Center. The program brings together specialists in East Asian studies and education to promote better understanding of Japan and China. As a resource center for teaching and learning about East Asia, the program serves many audiences, including elementary school teachers and schoold children, librarians, university students, community organizations, and families. |

Kits to Rent: Educators and Museum members may rent many on China and Japan through the
Museums Kit Rental Department. Containing artifacts, activities, and written and
audiovisual materials, the kits are designed for classroom and home-schooling use at all
grade levels. Some examples of popular East Asian kits include: Ancient China, Japanese
Families, Fine and Folk Arts of China, and Japanese Childrens Day. - Guided class visits: Teachers have several options for exploring Asia with their classes through the Museums exhibitions. A variety of school programs are offered on every weekday during the school year. - Teacher Center and Curriculum Materials: The Harchourt Teacher Leadership Center in The Childrens Museum houses thousands of resources for educators. The East Asia section contains numerous jounrals and recommended written and audiovisual teaching materials on China, Japan, Korea and Asian Americans for reference and circulation. In addition, innovative curriculum materials developed by East Asian Program staff are available in the Teacher Center and the Museum Shop. - On-Line Discussions: On-line conversations for educators provide a community of colleagues with whom to talk about successes, challenges, and resources for teaching the new curriculum frameworks. - Professional Development: Workshops and seminars for educators are scheduled throughout the year, with the support of the Teacher Center. The professional development programs on China, Japan, and Asia- related topics include in-depth background information, hands-on activities, and extensive handouts. In-service workshops may also be arranged. PDPs are available. |

Exhibitions: A permanent exhibition, Kyo-no-Machiya, an authentic Japanese house, provides
Museum visitors with and opportunity for full immersion in a traditional Japanese home
environment. Other changing exhibitions encourage visitors to learn about East Asian life
and culture through direct interaction with authentic materials. - Festivals: Every year, the Museum invites the public to join in celebrating Japanese New Year, Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and other Asian festivals. Throughout the Museum, children and families participate in activities, demonstrations and performances. |
