At its recent meeting in Ann Arbor, the AAS Board of Directors considered a proposal from the Program Committee to help facilitate childcare arrangements at future annual meetings. Options/scenarios presented in the proposal ranged from simply informing conference attendees of childcare providers in the conference city to providing a complete drop-in care center on-site at the conference hotel. After considering the pros and cons of each option (liability issues, costs, space constraints, etc.) the board would like to show its support for AAS members needing childcare at the annual meeting by enacting the following measures for the Philadelphia conference.
(1): Publicize the availability of childcare providers in Philadelphia in the AAS Newsletter and on the AAS website (see list below).
(2): Create a budget line that will provide modest childcare subsidies for conference attendees. The AAS will reimburse up to $100 per family for childcare expenses incurred on-site or in the conference city. Reimbursements are available only for conference attendees on the formal program, and requests must be supported with original receipts. Your Other Hands (http://www.yourotherhands.com/index.html) is Philadelphia’s only bonded babysitting and nanny service. Founded in 1988, they deliver a variety of services, including childcare at the conference hotel. Fees at press time were a minimum of $70 per visit ($20/hour for a minimum of three hours, plus a $10 transportation fee).
