Roundtable: Experiential Learning in Asia: New Directions in Study Abroad – Sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese

Organizer and Chair: Joan E. Ericson, Colorado College

Discussants: Anthony C. Ogden, Pennsylvania State University; Gary DeCoker, Earlham College; Marianna McJimsey, Colorado College

In 2006, the Year of Study Abroad, more students than ever are seeking to experience Asia firsthand through studying and living abroad. For students of language and culture, an in-country experience has always been a vital capstone for classroom-based learning. But today students and programs are delving into Asia in new ways. Through experiential learning activities, community-based learning, internships and field placements, and ethnographic research projects, students can apply the skills they have built in the classroom on a broader societal and cultural level. This roundtable will begin with a research presentation on experiential learning abroad; three commentators will discuss their experiences as faculty advisors and facilitators for a variety of education abroad programs in Japan, China, India, and Southeast Asia that feature experiential or community-based learning.
