Session 158: Roundtable: Getting Published: From Submission to Print at Six Refereed Journals

Organizer and Chair: Christopher Lupke, Washington State University

Discussants: Joanna Handlin Smith, Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies; Ann Waltner, University of Minnesota; John Whittier Treat III, Yale University; Ping-Kwan Leung, Lingnan University; Kate Nakai, Sophia University; Tani E. Barlow, University of Washington

Getting published is one of the most important, and stressful, aspects of the academic profession. It is especially daunting for colleagues new to the field. Yet it is a necessary component to progress toward tenure and promotion. One thing that could enhance the chances of getting published in refereed journals is a better understanding of the complex process of publication. In an effort to demystify the process, this roundtable discussion brings together the editors of six academic journals that focus on East Asia.

The discussion will feature speakers who represent journals emphasizing broad, intraregional and interdisciplinary approaches and foci as well as journals that specialize in Japanese or Chinese culture per se. A range of scholarly approaches and editorial persuasions will be represented on the panel as well. Such issues as targeting a journal, preparing the manuscript for submission, suggested methods of interacting with editors, expectations, and revision and resubmission will be covered in this open-ended discussion. Members of the audience are encouraged to come with questions of their own.
