Session 2: ROUNDTABLE: Saving Asia (on Microfilm): Prospects for Cooperative Microfilming and Preservation of Asian Research Materials (Sponsored by CORMOSEA and ALL)

Organizer: Richard Richie, Yale University

Chair: Raymond Lum, Harvard University

Discussants: James H. Nye, University of Chicago; Gerard T. Moran, MMF Publications; Mirjam Philippi-de Mink, IDC Publishers; Mary S. Zurbuchen, Ford Foundation; Norman Ross, Norman Ross Publishing Inc.

This roundtable will explore possibilities for closer cooperation among librarians, scholars, and commercial vendors of microforms in the selection, preservation, and distribution of Asian research materials through microformatting. It will focus on the preservation concerns of librarians, the marketing concerns of publishers, the role of scholars in identifying materials to be filmed and in setting priorities, and the concerns of granting agencies. The roundtable will be the first effort to open a continuing dialogue that can lead to cooperative actions aimed at increasing access to foreign research materials for Asian studies. Participants will represent libraries, microform publishers, and granting agencies that have provided funds for microfilming projects for East, South, and Southeast Asian studies.
