Session 63: Roundtable: A Framework for Advanced Japanese Language Instruction (Sponsored by Association of Teachers of Japanese)

Organizer and Chair: Laurel R. Rodd, University of Colorado

Discussants: Seiichi Makino, Princeton University; Ann Sherif, Oberlin College; Kimberly Jones, University of Arizona; Atsushi Fukada, Purdue University

A task force of the Association of Teachers of Japanese has been investigating issues related to "post-basic" Japanese language pedagogy. The task force has held several meetings with area studies scholars, as well as with language pedagogues, and has developed a first draft of a Framework for Advanced Japanese Language Instruction.

The Roundtable panel, consisting of members of the task force, will make brief (five minute) presentations of drafts of position papers on: the definition of post-basic Japanese; goals and tasks of language instruction at the post-basic level; appropriate learning activities; teaching materials; learning strategies; study abroad and immersion; technology; Japanese for special purposes and content-based instruction; and evaluation methods.

Panel presentations will be followed by audience discussion of the drafts and of the issues and problems raised. In order to facilitate discussion, abstracts of each topic—or, if possible, full drafts—will be distributed to the ATJ membership via the ATJ Newsletter and the ATJ homepage prior to the AAS meeting.
