Electronic text and images challenge the way we think about and access Southeast Asian resources. In universities and colleges throughout the U.S., the rapidly changing technologies have placed new demands on those most closely associated with the teaching and research of Southeast Asia: faculty and librarians. Faculty grapple with innovative approaches to use digitized text and images in their teaching and research. Librarians, long committed to sharing scarce resources on Southeast Asia, seek to balance preservation needs with ready worldwide access to the primary source material held in their collections. An increasing number of resources are available in electronic format, yet we have had very few opportunities to share ideas about their production, organization, and use for Southeast Asian studies.

This Roundtable invites key participants involved in creating, collecting, and ensuring access to the new digital text and image collections. Together they will explore what is technically possible, what is legal, and what has pedagogical and scholarly value within the context of Southeast Asian studies research needs. The panel includes a historian who has sought to integrate digitized images into the curriculum, Dr. Alfred W. McCoy; the Director of the Center for Research Libraries whose organization is involved in several digitization projects, Donald Simpson; the Director of the National Initiative for Networked Cultural Heritage who has actively fought to ensure "fair use" of copyright in the digital environment, David Green; and a representative from the Library of Congress' Digital Library program who will address the issues of emerging standards for document description.
