The 1995 World Conference on Women, sponsored by the United Nations, is to be held in Beijing from August 30-September 8, 1995. This will be a significant event for women all over the world, and for Chinese women in particular.

As the first organization of students, scholars and activists interested in Chinese Women's Studies, the Chinese Society for Women's Studies in the United States views the World Conference as an opportunity to contribute to the development of feminist discourse in China as well as an opportunity to learn about Chinese developments for Western scholars.

This round table discussion will review the latest international and regional planning activities and explore the range of roles that NGO and individual scholars and activists can play. Some specific areas we will address include;

  1. the 1995 World Conference related activity of CSWS in compiling the English Chinese Lexicon of Women and Law as a reference volume and networking resource for the Conference;
  2. the information about the recent boom of Women's Studies on university campuses in China;
  3. the activities of NGOs and grassroots groups in China;
  4. the assessment of the development of feminist discourse in China.
