For questions regarding membership, please read the section below, visit the AAS Membership page, or contact AAS Membership Manager, Doreen Ilozor, at dilozor@aasianst.org.
How long does an AAS membership last?
An AAS membership lasts either one year or two years. Members who join for two years enjoy a 10% discount.
An AAS membership duration is based on a yearly quarter. The quarter cutoff dates are: March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.
For example, if you join on August 10, your membership will be in good standing until September 30 of either the next year or two years later.
I have forgotten my password, and wish to renew my membership. May I select the “Join AAS” button and complete the new member form?
Yes. All AAS memberships are manually checked. If we find an existing membership profile, we will link it with the new member application.
Where can I get my receipt?
All members will automatically be emailed their receipt. If you have not received it, please contact Doreen Ilozor, dilozor@aasianst.org, for a receipt to be mailed to you.
How do I access the online Journal of Asian Studies (JAS) for free?
Online access to the Journal of Asian Studies is available to all current AAS members. Once you log in to the Member Only section of the AAS website, select “the Online Journal of Asian Studies” link. This will open the Cambridge Journals website. There is no need to log in again to Cambridge's site once you reach this page. Simply scroll down the page, and select the JAS volume and issue number you wish to read (older issues are available via the “Back Volumes” link). All issues of JAS published since 2004 (Volume 63) are available online to current members.
Is there an AAS Member Directory?
Yes. The AAS Member Directory is only available online (a print version is no longer available). The online Member Directory is available to AAS members via the Member Only section of the AAS website.
What is an Associate membership?
Associate memberships are available to a spouse of a regular AAS member whose membership is current during the same time frame, and the fee paid by the regular member is based on the higher income of the two. At this discounted rate, Associate members will receive the Annual Meeting program, and will be able to register for the Annual Meeting at the member rate. Associate members will have access to the Member Only section of the AAS website.
May I make my AAS membership retroactive?
No. An AAS membership is made active when your payment is processed and we are unable to backdate memberships or send back issues of the Journal of Asian Studies or Asian Studies Newsletter.
How can I obtain print back copies of the Journal of Asian Studies (JAS)?

Note that all AAS members may access the online Journal of Asian Studies (from 2004 to present) for free via the Member Only section of the AAS website.
Do you publish news about AAS member achievements or awards?
Yes. The AAS encourages its members to inform us of achievements or awards for inclusion in the Asian Studies Newsletter (announcements for the “Member News” section of the Newsletter should be sent to Doreen Ilozor at dilozor@aasianst.org).
Please note, due to space constraints, the Asian Studies Newsletter is not able to include announcements of new books published by members. Members are encouraged to have their publisher send a copy of their new book to the Journal of Asian Studies for review. Please forward copies to:
Association for Asian Studies
ATTN: Journal of Asian Studies Book Reviews
1021 E. Huron Street
Ann Arbor MI 481041
Why can I not have my Family name printed first on my mailing label?
The AAS database has one field for a member’s first name, and one field for family name. For consistency, all members are listed “First Name” then “Family Name”. The AAS apologizes for any inconvenience, however, we cannot change the order of names on mailing labels.
For questions regarding the AAS Annual Meeting, please read the section below, visit the AAS Annual Meeting page, or contact the AAS Annual Meeting Manager, Karen Fricke, at kfricke@aasianst.org.
How does the AAS choose a venue for its annual meeting?
Please click here to see an article concerning the factors that govern the choice of venue for AAS Annual Meetings.
I preregistered, but now I can’t attend the meeting. Can I have a refund?
For the 2009 meeting in Chicago (March 26–29) participants can receive refunds until December 5, 2008. Non-participants can receive refunds until March 5, 2009. There will be a $10 charge for all refunds. Please email conference manager Karen Fricke (kfricke@aasianst.org) with your refund request.
Because your annual meeting badge acts as your ticket to the panels, if you request a refund after we have mailed your badge, you must return it to us before we can issue you a refund. We must receive the badge back before the refund deadline.
I’m a participant who didn’t get to preregister until after December 5. Can you still put my name in the program?
In order to allow adequate time for layout, editing, printing, and shipping of the Annual Meeting Program, we must set a deadline by which all participants’ names must be received and cannot add your name in after this point. If you preregister after December 5 but before February 13, your name and paper title will still appear in the Annual Meeting Addendum, available at the conference site.
I don’t have enough money to attend the meeting—are there any travel grants or other ways to save money?
• If you are a student with a valid school ID, please see the next FAQ for information on preregistering for the reduced student price.
• If you are a graduate student with valid school ID AND are accepted on a formal program panel AND pre-register by the December 5 deadline, there is an approximately $200 travel stipend that you may pick up at the conference registration desk by showing your student ID. Your paper proposal (if accepted) serves as the application for this stipend, so you do not need to fill out any other forms. No stipends will be given to anyone registering after the December 5 deadline.
• If you are a graduate student presenting a paper on Korea at the meeting, you may be eligible for a grant from the Northeast Asia Council (http://www.aasianst.org/grants/main.htm#NEAC-KOREAN, scroll to “AAS Annual Meeting Travel Grants for Korean Studies Graduate Students”).
• Finally, in the spring we offer a roommate finder board on our website that may help you find meeting attendees looking to split the cost of accommodations.
I’m a student—how do I receive the discounted preregistration rate?
To receive the discounted student preregistration rate, you MUST show us a readable copy of your valid student ID with current year visible. We will not register you until we receive this, even if you have a student membership or are a participant.
You can show us your ID by doing one of the following:
• Scanning the ID and emailing the files to Lisa Hanselman, lhanselman@aasianst.org as a PDF, .doc, JPEG, or GIF file
• Mailing us a xeroxed copy of the ID (must be readable—make sure the copier does not black out your photo or information)
• Faxing a copy to 734-665-3801.
Can you recommend other hotels in the meeting area?
We regret that we can only provide rates and reservation information for the contracted host hotel.
